Foreign Student Dorm Opportunities
On the evening of August 21, 2011, a newly renovated dormitory for Harford Christian School international students was officially dedicated to the cause of Christian education and the good news of Jesus Christ. After the evening service, more than one hundred members of the congregation joined neighbors from the community for a special time of dedication and open house. Dr. John McKnight, pastor of the Evangelical Methodist Church, led the dedication with a reading from God’s Word and a special time of prayer. Mr. Nathan and Mrs. Erin McKnight will serve as the dormitory host parents. Miss Sumi Yang will provide support for students on campus.
Eight is enough! Nine months after the dedication of the new home we know a little more about the “family”. Pictured below are dorm parents, Mr. Nathan and Mrs. Erin McKnight with their daughter Juliet and students; Stacy, Jenny, Max, Shunny, Bradly, Sam, and Paul. Through the challenges of being in a new school, new country and a new home, students received a Christian education, learned another language and experienced some first-class homemade meals.
Ordinary large families get used to each other over the years. This school year was a crash course in approaching family life with patience, grace and humor. As with all families chores are shared and schedules are juggled.
Mrs. McKnight summarized the school year in the HCS yearbook:
“There were some tears and sorrows … but there was also craziness, and lots of good times. One school year, 10 strangers … one house. We may not be a family but we certainly behaved like one … and got to know things about one another … some that we wanted to know and some that we just didn’t want to know. Despite the chaos, we can all say that we are stronger because of our experience and have learned much from each other.”
God works in a mysterious way. The fruits of His work within this family may not be fully known for years. Some of the students will graduate this year and take with them what they have learned about American family life and the life and work of Jesus Christ. Prayers are with these students as they return home to their families for the summer.
