Q. What about religious education?

A. There is Bible instruction every day, biblical integration in every subject and weekly chapel services for grades 1-12

Q. What is your academic emphasis?

A. Serving a diverse population, HCS has elite academic students and students with special needs. “If I accept you as you are, I make you worse; however, if I treat you as though you are what you are capable of becoming, I help you become that.”  Goethe

Q. What about ability grouping?

A. Heterogeneous grouping – most all subjects; Homogeneous grouping – math, honors courses, reading

Q. Do you have special education?

A. Yes. We have 5 fulltime equivalent teachers, careful assessment and limited enrollment.

Q. What about homework?

A. We believe that homework is important and should reinforce what is taught in the classroom. There are workload guidelines based on grade level.

Q. What are the class sizes?

A. We have 380 students and 45 teaching faculty. Some classes are as small as 4-6 but most classes are in the high teens to low 20’s. Primary grades are a lower teacher to student ratio.

Q. What about technology education?

A. We have two computer labs and a networked campus. Formal instruction begins in 4th grade. Two high school technology credits are required for graduation.

Q. What is your early childhood education like?

A. K-4 (Preschool) is very experiential and activity based. K-5 is more academic – most reading before the end of the year. We have fun with a purpose.

Q. Do you have school uniforms?

A. Yes. Grades 1-6 enjoy several uniform options. Grades 7-12 have two basic uniform options.

Q. How long is the school day?

A. Arrival time is between 8:10 and 8:25 AM. Dismissal time is between 3:15 and 3:30 PM.

Q. Is there bus transportation?

A. Yes. We serve Harford, Cecil, and Baltimore Counties. Two buses serve the Southern York County Pennsylvania area. Contact the school office for more information.

Q. What curriculum materials?

A. We use 85% Bob Jones University Press, 10% Abeka and 5% other. For a complete list Click Here (454K).

Q. What are your extracurricular offerings?

A. Fine_Arts – Formal music instruction beginning K – 6, piano instruction beginning in first grade and band instruction at 4th grade. We have choirs and ensembles, hand bell choir and dramatic production.
Athletics include girls volleyball, field hockey, soccer, golf, cross country, basketball, and softball; boys soccer, golf, cross country, basketball and baseball.

Q. Do you have formal events?

A. Students in grades 9-12 enjoy a formal banquet in the spring each year.  many school staff attent our Junior/Senior banquet. (not a “prom” context)

Q. What about field trips?

A. Students benefit from field trips in all subject areas including foreign language trips to foreign countries.

Q. What is your discipline procedure?

A. Primary level – positive reinforcement handled at the classroom level, Intermediate – start to prepare students for the demerit system Junior High and up – demerit system. We believe in no surprises and clearly define our expectations.

Q. What is taught beyond the classroom?

A. We teach the whole child – physical, emotional, spiritual and social. Treating others as we would like to be treated comes from God’s Word.
