Students begin instrumental lessons in fourth grade. Qualified private instruction is offered for brass, woodwind, and percussion. First-year students participate in Beginning Band while second and third-year students participate in Intermediate Band. Performance opportunities include the Elementary Christmas and Spring Concerts as well as an Outdoor Band Concert in late May. HCS has also been well-represented every year at the Maryland Association of Christian Schools fine arts competition by instrumental soloists, small ensembles, and the Intermediate Band, regularly earning first-place honors.
High School Band
The High School Concert Band is for band students from seventh to twelfth grade. Every year, students enjoy the Bob Jones University Band Workshop which is hosted by HCS. The workshop allows students to learn from an experienced collegiate-level conductor and have one-on-one time with instrumental music majors from BJU. Two days of concentrated rehearsals are followed by a performance for family and friends in Ziegler Auditorium. Later in the fall, the Concert Band performs their annual Fall Concert in the chandelier lobby. The second half of the year begins with preparation for the MACS fine arts competition. In addition to competing against other bands, students are also encouraged to participate in the solo and small ensemble categories. HCS has maintained a strong heritage of musical excellence in our state evidenced by our many first-place trophies. The school year ends with our Spring Concert and the Music in the Parks festival at Hersheypark.
